Alberta Moose Hunting Bruce Rowe, #1 Alberta Moose

This was our second trip to Wild Kakwa Outfitters in Grande Prairie, Alberta. My dad, Ray and myself had a wonderful first trip...He fell only 20 yards from where I shot the first time. We walked up to the bull and he was huge. 51 inch spread with huge paddles on each side. I was really thrilled to have killed a bull of this size with my Muzzleloader. We did measure the bull back at camp and he measured 191 Boone and Crockett.

What an adventure. And the best part was this trip exceeded it's build up of expectations. After finding Wild Kakwa on the Internet, and having wanted to go on a moose hunt ever since I can remember, it was nearly unbearable to find out that I would be looking at a two year wait to get on their list back in the fall of 2004.

On Oct 6 2008, I ventured out with Wild Kakwa Outfitters on my second hunt with them. After being very succesful on my first, I thought I would try my luck with my archery skills. ... Little Ricky would be our guide and we knew that he would push us deep into the wilderness of Alberta. It started out so fast, our first hour we were stalking a bull, but no shot was presented. We saw moose everyday along with other wildlife such as elk, mule deer ,bear, whitetails.

I was the last hunter in camp to harvest a moose. On the last morning I could hunt, my guide, Mel, and I ran across two cow moose about 450 yards across a clear cut. We got in position to view the area behind the cows and there he was. Mel stated it's a (!@#%^) monster! It takes a good amount of horn to impress Mel, who is a very experienced guide. We decided to stalk into position because if we called, the cows might take the bull away. We duck walked and belly crawled to within 60 yards of the big bull...

On the second morning after another large breakfast we went to a different area, as we were walking and Ricky was cow calling, about 8 am we got an answer from a bull that was very close. Ricky positioned himself behind and to the side of Bruce and myself and continued calling. Bruce and I had decided earlier that I would shoot first and he would Video record the hunt. Well it didn't take long before we heard and saw the bull coming down a small game trail. As he was coming Bruce was recording and I had my gun up and ready and I could hear him whispering, don't shoot yet, not yet, finally the bull was huge and within 60 yards when I shot...After many pictures and a lot of work we got the bull back to camp. He was a beautiful 51 " Bull. It was pretty exciting on my first moose hunt.

My hunting partner, Ed, and I were guided by Mel (aka-the guide who will walk your tail off) into the "Valley of the Big Bulls", a moose paradise. It's also the location of my first unplanned "swim" of the week using the quad as a spring board. While other hunters in camp had gotten their moose, I was still waiting for my opportunity while hunting hard with Mel and Ed. Then, it finally came. Ricky spotted a moose on the edge of a clear cut. We quickly set up on the bull. I moved three or four times to get a clear shot at him. However, I did not succeed. Why you ask? Because, I cut brush with only three bullets that I had taken into the clear-cut with me! The bull stood broadside at 60 yards looking at me with a quizzical look. I was looking at him with a dazed look! I could not believe that I had not taken more ammunition with me...

We heard a bunch of noise coming out of the bush, and then we heard the moose grunt. Rick called some more and though we couldn't see him, the bull grunted some more and began to come toward us. I saw him, my heart really began to pound. I tried to relax but that wasn't working too well. The first thing to hit me was just how big he really was. Right then I knew that this was the bull I wanted...

I am back hunting with Wild Kakwa Outfitters. This is my second hunt with Rick Houweling, and this time I brought 5 friends along, with the promise, that they will all shoot a moose. Needless to say, at least half of the group was thinking that I had lost a couple of brain cells, and if 4 out of 6 of us get a moose, that would be considered a good trip. It was a tough week, way too warm for early October, and the moose rut was just not there. But Rick and the crew at Wild Kakwa came through again. All 6 of us shot moose...

"As you can see from the smile on my face (wife commented that she'd never seen me smile like that before) I was very happy with the way my hunt turned out...I still had four days of hunting left. I tell him that a low 40s bull might not be too bad. He says "No, it's a little over 40 inches!" I tell him that I heard him the first time and he repeats himself again. Took awhile, but the light bulb finally came on. I was able to use the log deck as a solid rest and pulled the trigger. He wasn't fourteen inches better than 40, but he was eleven and that was certainly good enough for me!

I must admit I am still in awe of having taken the bull that I did and have been thinking what I could possibly say that wouldn't make the whole experience sound too good to be true! Multiple online searches and use of different hunting websites led me to researching Wild Kakwa Outfitters. Their web page showed a very impressive array of trophy photo's and a success rate that was second to none... The fourth day of an 8 day hunt I was lucky enough to harvest my bull, and what a bull it was. I had gotten a look at tremendous paddles and knew he was a shooter, and truly did not hesitate to take my shot when it presented itself...

Our dear friend John Hall from Virginia, passed away in 2013 and he left us with wonderful memories of his love for hunting and the outdoors. John was one of our repeat hunters, a great friend and will be missed. We couldn't be happier that he was able to live out one of his lifelong dreams of taking a true Alberta trophy Moose.

This was my 4th hunt with Wild Kakwa Outfitters, and proved to be one of the most challenging of all. I had 3 tags (Moose, Elk, and Mule Deer). Early in the hunt I passed on 3 small bull moose, and on 2 small mule deer, as I had no thoughts of ever coming up empty. The weather was often windy and cold making calling for elk almost impossible, but we spent about 5 days.. to no avail... trying to get an elk.

Over the last 3 days of the hunt, I concentrated on trying to get a moose, as all of the others in camp, except for one hunter who filled later, had already filled their moose tags. On the last day of my hunt, we (Mel..my guide) and I hunted hard all day...

What a great adventure and hunt Bruce and I had. As you can imagine, after having booked my hunt a full two years before, it was safe to say that I was eagerly anticipating my first day out with our guide Mel. Unfortunately, the first two days of our hunt were under torrential rains, nevertheless Mel kept us going, kept our spirits up and made sure we were always seeing moose. With the cooperation of the weather on the third morning, Bruce and Mel were quickly into bulls and due to Mel's intimate knowledge of the terrain and some fast and furious leg-work Bruce was suddenly staring at a gorgeous 52-in. bull.

This was not only my first moose hunt, but also my first hunting experience in Canada. And a wonderful experience it was!...We listened to a 47-inch rutting bull grunt as he made his way directly toward our position. What a thrill! As the moose approached, Rick motioned for me to setup near a tree because, according to his calculation, the moose would be coming out of the woods about 50 yards below our position. Rick couldn't have been more correct! The moose appeared, stood broadside in the middle of the cut, and Rick gave me the "green light" to take him. My first shot hit him in the heart. He quartered away from us, took a few steps, and started to wobble. I finished him with a second shot. The whole experience was nothing short of breathtaking!

To express the many dynamics of emotions a person feels when traveling thirty-six hours, into another country, to hunt an animal they have only seen in a few publications, is undaunting... On the evening of day three, we were glassing a large clear-cut area on the crest of a hill. Matt called several times and off in the distance I heard the low guttural sound of a bull moose. The anticipation grew to an unbearable level. Matt expected the moose to crest the hill in close proximity to us, however, the bull walked past our location near the edge of the timber and stopped approximately thirty-five yards to our right rear-quartering flank...

This was my first trip out of the United States to hunt. My uncle and cousin had been talking about hunting moose for quite some time. After two years of planning and 35 hours of driving we finally rolled into Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada...To go from hunting Missouri whitetail deer to Alberta moose, is quite a large step. My uncle and cousin and I agreed if we were lucky enough to bring back two moose to Missouri, it would be wildly successful after 8 days of hunting. We weren't disappointed. We each killed very nice moose. In fact all three of our hunts were over in 5 days.

It was September of 2007, after a couple of days in Banff and Jasper National Parks, we arrived in Grand Prairie. After a restless night Rita called us with the exciting news that our arrival to camp was nearing. After another restless night, we set out to experience our first taste of moose hunting. Unbelievably, before we even entered the woods we saw our first moose about 100 yards down the trail. We immediately prepared ourselves for the first of what turned out to be numerous encounters. We entered the bush and within 30 minutes Ricky had two bulls grunting and thrashing trees right in front of us.

My Alberta adventure was truly awesome. Ricky, my guide took me through some beautiful country. We saw grizzly, elk, fox, coyote, Pine Martin, mule deer, black bear and huge whitetail bucks. This week of moose hunting started off seeing a cow and calf moose. Day 3 I had a shooter bull about 42 inches at 200 yards and passed. I was looking for a bigger, heavier bull. The action was really starting to heat up with the rut. Ricky and I walked a high bluff and saw 3 bulls within an hour.

We began the hunt in a snowstorm that quickly turned to warm and windy. This was equivalent to having the bull moose take a cold shower. We kept checking different locations and calling without much success...Rick & Ricky took Sheryl one way and I went with Charlie a different direction. At lunch, Sheryl was excited. They had spotted 2 bull moose and began to call. Not having much success with cow calls, Ricky decided to grunt and thrash the brush. The moose came in to less than 30 yards and turned sideways without offering a shot..

My moose hunt with Wild Kakwa Outfitters was the adventure of a lifetime. Rick, Rita and the guides were excellent hosts, great guides, and simply fun people to be around. The accommodations were excellent. We were hunting about 6 miles deep down an old cutline. We had stopped at a deep creek, Rick walked to the edge and cow called, and was immediately answered with gutteral sounds of a bull. The bull came in on a run, with only the antlers visible to us above the alders.

They are also returning from a moose hunt, but they can't stop talking about their success and the great time they had, hunting with Rick Houweling, and Wild Kakwa Outfitters. It turns out they both shot 50" + Canadian Moose, (one bull turned out to be the largest moose shot in Alberta on an outfitted hunt that year) And, while showing me pictures and film footage of their hunt, they could not stop talking about what a great camp Rick ran, and how this was truly, the hunt of their lifetime. So, the day after I am back home, I'm calling Rick Houweling, and booking a moose hunt...

We had both been to Canada before on Whitetail, and Black Bear hunts, but this was the first time we were to be hunting Moose...It was the most exciting hunt I have ever been part of. My moose ended up scoring 206 B&C gross, 196 net. His spread was 51 3/8. He is entered into the Boone and Crocket record book, and was in fact the largest Bull Moose taken in Alberta on a guided hunt in 2001.

"A Big Game Hunters Dream Come True"

I have hunted for most of 60 years and my dream came true at age 72. I am so proud of my 47" Trophy Moose and am presently in the process of a shoulder mount. I am also writing a journal, with pictures, for the future hunters in my family.

Alberta, Canada, is known for quality whitetail deer hunting. I have found the entire experience of the hunt with Wild Kakwa to be very enjoyable. I have hunted with many different outfitters in the U. S., Canada, and New Zealand. Rick has proven to be an excellent guide, and an honest and dependable person. The accommodations and food are superb. Their hospitality and friendship are appreciated. The opportunity to harvest a quality first-class whitetail was excellent.

From Rick's constant scouting from the time he leaves you to the time he picks you up, ( the man really works hard for you, and wants you to fill your tag ) to Rita's awesome cooking, ( she makes you feel right at home, Thanks Mom, lol ) and to my new hunting friends ( see you next year Neal ). He planned to find a spot where we could see for some distance both ways, and then sit and do some calling until dark. My mind was reflecting on how long could my bad luck continue. However, I was pleased that my partner, Wayne had an opportunity that morning. He had to take a rushed shot at a 5x5 who saw him first and turned, leaving Wayne a split second decision. He wounded the elk but after 2 hours of tracking, had to give up when the blood trail was lost, and it became apparent that the wound was probably not serious and we would never catch up to him. Well, at least we had some action. Too bad Wayne didn't get a better look at that elk.

This bull was in the 320-350 scoring range and was a great bull.

I chose Wild Kakwa Outfitters for several reasons. First , I wanted to try "new country" since I'd done several trips out west hunting elk in the mountains. Second, the terrain, though beautifully thick, promised to be easier to navigate for my dad who's getting up there in years. Third, if my dad or I shot a bull, it would probably be quite large since the elk up in Alberta are simply a bigger animal than, say, a typical Colorado bull. I have hunted three times with Wild Kakwa Outfitters. Each hunt has been different and each hunt has been great. The first hunt was for moose. We decided to wait a little while because the thermals were just beginning to rise out of the valley and I needed that wind in my favor. It wasn't long before we were satisfied, and I descended into the valley and tucked in tight against the woodline and left behind a large dead v shaped tree as Mel made his way across the hillside and hid behind some second growth almost directly above me. Mel no sooner began to cow call when I heard the animal moving through the cedars. My heart started to pound and then I could hear him breathing, very conscious of my movements...
